Adolescent Depression Prevention Project

An interactive model of Feelings, Thoughts, and Actions.

Home

Adolescent depression is a serious and surprisingly common problem, affecting up to 20% of all teenagers at some point. In addition to causing suffering for the individual, depressed adolescents can experience school problems, difficulties at home and with their peers, and future work and relationship difficulties. Despite these serious consequences, less than 25% of depressed teenagers receive treatment, so it is important to try to prevent adolescent depression before it begins.

Oregon Research Institute has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to compare two depression prevention programs to an assessment control. The first program involves six weekly hour-long group sessions designed to increase positive thoughts and pleasant activities. The group will be led by a school counselor, nurse, or teacher from your child’s school. In the second program, students will be given a self-help book that many people have used to improve their mood. The book is called Feeling Good, by Dr. David Burns. In the assessment control condition, students will receive a pamphlet on signs of depression and information about treatments for depression.
