Judy Andrews' areas of interest include the etiology and prevention of substance use in childhood through emerging adulthood, and the evaluation of tobacco cessation interventions. She is principal investigator on an ongoing fourteen-year longitudinal study, the Oregon Youth Substance Use Project (OYSUP), investigating the risk and protective factors associated with development of substance use, beginning when the participants were in elementary school and following them until they are one-year post-high school, with an intensive assessment age 20/21. This data set will be archived with the NAHDAP, at the University of Michigan. Dr. Andrews recently completed an ARRA funded study with two of the cohorts at age 20/21 assessing early adversity and more current life events and chronic difficulties. Within this study, she is assessing genetic vulnerabilities to environmental adversity. She was also recently funded through an FDA supplement to examine the prevalence and predictors of novel tobacco use among the OYSUP participants. Dr. Andrews is also the principal investigator on a recently completed study to develop and evaluate an intranet-based smoking prevention study targeting 5th graders and 6th graders, and on a study to develop and evaluate a computer-based alcohol prevention study targeting 7th and 8th graders.
