At their annual meeting in San Francisco in February 2019, the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco (SNRT) recognized their 2019 Fellows - including ORI researcher Herb Severson, Ph.D. SRNT Research Fellows are individuals who have had a substantive impact on the field and who have made seminal contributions that have influenced the direction of research on nicotine and tobacco. Dr. Severson has been an investigator on more than 60 NIH grants since 1979. He has conducted some of the earliest studies on smokeless tobacco prevention and cessation.
Severson has contributed sections for four Surgeon General’s reports as well as chapters to Institute of Medicine reports on smoking cessation and harm reduction. Recent research efforts include participating in a multi-site trial to evaluate the effects of reduced nicotine cigarettes on smokers. Severson has also evaluated the efficacy of interactive Web and mobile interventions for training professionals to intervene with patients on tobacco cessation, alcohol abuse, drug use, and eating disorders. He also developed and evaluated Web-based tobacco cessation interventions for adults (ChewFree.com) and young smokeless tobacco (ST) users ages 14-25 (MyLastDip.com).
