Judy Andrews' areas of interest include the etiology and prevention of substance use in childhood through emerging adulthood, and the evaluation of tobacco cessation interventions. She is principal investigator on an ongoing longitudinal study, which began in 1998, the Oregon Youth Substance Use Project (OYSUP), investigating the risk and protective factors associated with development of substance use, beginning when the participants were in elementary school and following them annually until they are one-year post-high school, with an intensive assessment age 20/21. Dr. Andrews was funded through ARRA to further assess two of the cohorts at age 20/21. This assessment included an examination of early adversity, more current life events and chronic difficulties, and genetic vulnerabilities to environmental adversity. Through an FDA funded supplement, data was also collected from OYSUP participants at age 21- 26 to examine the prevalence and predictors of novel tobacco use. The entire data set has been archived with the NAHDAP, at the University of Michigan. As Principal Investigator, Dr. Andrews led a team in the development and evaluation of two school-based prevention programs, delivered via the internet. The first, Click City: Tobacco, is focused on tobacco prevention, including e-cigarette use. This program is designed for 5th and 6th graders, prior to the onset of tobacco. The second program, for 7th and 8th graders, is designed to prevent heavy alcohol use and the consequences of this use.
